World Health Organization Confronts Significant Staff Reduction Following US Financial Withdrawal

The international health agency disclosed plans to reduce its staff by almost a quarter – amounting to more than two thousand positions – by mid-2026.

Funding Crisis Prompts Major Reorganization

The decision comes after the US, formerly the organization's biggest donor, pulled out financial support previously this period.

Washington was responsible for about 18% of the organization's total funding, causing a substantial budgetary gap.

Projected Staff Cuts

Based on internal projections, the workforce is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in early 2025 to around 7,030 by June 2026.

This reduction of 2,371 positions comprises job cuts, employees retiring, and regular attrition.

"The past year was among the most difficult in our history, while we have navigated a painful but essential journey of prioritisation and realignment," commented the organization's director-general.

Budget Shortfall Remains

This Geneva-based body currently confronts a funding shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the upcoming period, amounting to almost a fourth of its required funding.

This figure represents an improvement from a previous projected gap of $1.7bn noted in spring.

Excluded Funding

The financial calculations exclude an additional 1.1 billion dollars in potential contributions from current negotiations with various contributors.

The representative for the organization stated that the present unfunded portion of the biennial budget is in fact lower than in earlier years, attributing this to multiple reasons:

  • A smaller overall budget size
  • Initiation of a new donor outreach effort
  • Higher in member states' mandatory fees

This restructuring process is currently approaching its completion, allowing the agency to progress with a reshaped structure.
