The England head coach expressed his regret that the Three Lions team did not enjoy greater support from the Wembley spectators during their decisive friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
The manager was pleased to see his team showcase their winning momentum, with goals from Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the opening quarter deciding the contest. However, he was unhappy with the atmosphere at the iconic venue.
“We had limited sessions to get ready against a organized team and we performed excellently,” the coach remarked. “We could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth ones. There was little noise. There was no support from the stands. We did everything to win.”
“How much more can you deliver in the first quarter? We prevented them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the team warranted greater backing today.”
“I support this statement. We cannot do more than leading 3-0 in a derby. I hoped for a little more backing in moments where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to support us, there was excessive support for Wales. It could have helped us to regain energy, but that’s the way it went and that is it.”
Apart from risking a dispute among fans, Tuchel also created controversy by omitting Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. But the choice was backed up by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“He plays his game,” Tuchel said. “He is a No 10 and he is vying for his spot.”
The Wales manager expressed hope that his team, who face a strong Belgian side in a crucial qualifying match on Monday, take lessons from their awful performance in the opening period.
“This is why I wanted this friendly,” the manager stated. “I wanted to assess our current level. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today gives me inspiration.”
Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after clattering into a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team face Latvia in the Latvian capital in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
